Myanmar Pharmaceutical Market : Industry Growth, Research, Analysis, Shares and Forecast

Despite its small size, Myanmar's pharmaceutical market offers drugmakers strong revenue-earning opportunities. Generic and over-the-counter drug companies in particular stand to benefit, as the population's per capita expenditure on pharmaceuticals and healthcare remains low but set to rise. However we believe that the country remains a high-risk market as a result of political risks arising from ethnic tensions, in addition to the challenging economic framework - the result of corruption and unclear regulations.

Headline Expenditure Projections

Pharmaceuticals: MMK241.2bn (US$280mn) in 2012 to MMK279.5bn (US$320mn) in 2013; +15.9% in local currency terms and 14.1% in US dollar terms.
Healthcare: MMK992.5bn (US$1.1bn) in 2012 to MMK1,098.4bn (US$1.3bn) in 2013; +10.7% in local currency terms and +9.0% in US dollar terms.

Risk/Reward Rating

Myanmar does not feature in our latest Q313 Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Risk/Reward Ratings (RRR). However, using the tool, BMI notes that the country scores 29.6 out of the maximum 100 under our newly improved RRR system. With the low score, Myanmar is ranked last out of the 18 key markets featured in the region.

Key Trends And Developments

In June 2013, Jang Kyung Won, director general of South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare stated that the country is seeking medical collaboration with Myanmar in a long-term medical support and technical exchange. Jang stated that the country will start by providing free operations in South Korea to Myanmar patients who require surgeries that are unavailable in Myanmar.
In the same month, the Irrawaddy reported that the country's public hospitals are offering free medicines to poor patients for the first time.
In April 2013, Harijit Gill, chief executive for the ASEAN and Asia Pacific of Philips Electronics stated that the company is planning to expand its consumer electronics and healthcare business in Myanmar.
